The Shorthorn breed of cattle is known technically as a landrace, in that the breed grew out of a specific locality.

The Milking Shorthorn is a segment of the larger breed. It was first imported to the United States and Virginia in 1783 to furnish milk, meat and power to settlers of the New World. Today, it is known for its milk and high butterfat content, as well as the gentleness of the breed.
