How far does your food travel?
Did you know that Peaches grow on the moon? They might as well, considering the distance food items travel to our plates. In only two generations, we have forgotten that what is fresh in the garden, barn yard, or orchard is what’s available for dinner today or for preserving for a rainy day. The average food item in The United States travels approximately 1,300 miles by land, sea and air to reach our tables. If each American eats ten items a day, and most eat more, that amounts to 4,745,000 miles per year per person. This distance is equal to 10 trips to the moon and back a year.
Can you imagine the fuel, man-power, and resources burned and the pollution emitted by a fleet of 285,000,000 trucks driving to the moon and back 10 times a year just to put out-of-season products on this nation’s dinner table?
We can! Conservative estimates put this number at approximately $12,000,000.00 per year in added food costs in fuel, in addition to increasing our dependence on foreign food, foreign oil, increasing the national debt, and putting small farmers out of business.
That’s why we are devoting our energy and resources to bringing you the very best local meat and produce available. Most of our meat and much of the produce we serve is grown here in Upperville at Ayrshire Farm and other neighboring farms.
